Overturned tractor-trailer closes I-78 East near Route 61

It’s happened again. An accident involving a tractor-trailer has closed a stretch of Interstate 78 in Berks County. The latest mishap occurred around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, when a tractor-trailer veered off the eastbound on-ramp from Route 61 in Tilden Township, struck a pickup truck, and rolled onto its side, according to Pennsylvania State Police.  The tractor-trailer’s driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, police said; the driver of the pickup was not reported to be injured. Three large tow trucks worked together to upright the overturned tractor-trailer, but it will be sometime before all the wreckage is cleared for I-78 East to reopen.  The eastbound lanes remain blocked between the Route 61/Reading (Exit 29A) and Hamburg (Exit 30) interchanges, with traffic being forced off the highway at the Shartlesville interchange (Exit 23). The I-78 on-ramp from Route 61 is also closed. The westbound lanes of I-78 are open and unaffected.
