Teen girl dead after school bus rear-ended in fog by dump truck

A teen girl is dead after a school bus and semi-tractor crashed on a rural road in Thorhild County Wednesday morning. The girl was declared dead on scene after emergency crews were called to the 8 a.m. collision near Range Road 223 and Township Road 593 in Thorhild County, said authorities, including Alberta Health Services spokesman Kerry Williamson. The school bus driver was taking 14 students to the K-12 Thorhild Central School, said Ross Hunter, communications officer for Aspen View Public Schools.

The driver and other students were assessed by emergency crews but did not require medical attention, he said. A second school bus later brought the rest of the students to the school, Hunter said. The district has contacted the families of all the students on the bus, and brought extra counsellors to the school Wednesday, he said. STARS air ambulance was dispatched to the scene from Edmonton 16 minutes after the 8 a.m. call to the scene, spokeswoman Fatima Khawaja said, but local medical crews called them off while the helicopter was still en route. Thorhild is located around 80 kilometres northeast of Sherwood Park.
