Snow squalls cause multiple Simcoe County crashes

Southbound traffic has been blocked on Hwy. 400 after a pile-up, OPP are reporting. The collision is near Bayfield Street and OPP officers and other emergency personnel are working to clear the scene. All lanes are blocked and as many as 50 cars are reported to be in that collision. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said no injuries have been reported.

Another collision was reported northbound on the Bayfield Street off-ramp, with the left lane blocked. High winds and blowing snow are causing trouble on the roads and officers remind motorists to go slow in the snow. It was a busy afternoon for emergency services in other areas of Simcoe County.

Springwater Fire and Emergency Services reported “whiteout conditions” while responding to multiple crashes, including one that required extrication at the Wilson Drive and Sunnidale Road intersection. Crews also responded to collisions at the Highway 26 off-ramp to George Johnston Road, Crossland Road, County Road 6, Flos Road 8 and Glengarry Landing Road.

Wires were also down at several locations in Tiny Township and Innisfil Fire and Emergency Services crews responded to collisions on Big Bay Point and Innisfil Beach roads. All of the abovementioned incidents were ongoing as of 4:30 p.m. Springwater Mayor Bill French announced the cancellation of the April 4 township council meeting via Twitter late this afternoon. “There are many roads closed in the Springwater and driving is treacherous,” he said. “There has been a multiple vehicle pileup and visibility is zero in many areas. We will announce the rescheduling of the regular Council Meeting sometime tomorrow.”
