Hundreds of chickens were killed when a tractor trailer crashed Monday on a rural road in northeastern Ohio. Chickens lay dead on the road or hung from crates after the crash on Bowman Road in Stark County’s Washington Township, while other chickens still alive huddled on the roadway or in a nearby ditch.

The tractor trailer owned by Case Farms dropped off the north side of the berm, sheared a utility pole and overturned onto its side, Washington Township emergency officials on the scene said.

The driver, Robert Richardson, 63, of Dennison, said he was not injured, but company policy required him to be taken to an area hospital for examination. ″(The driver) was out of the truck when we arrived,” said Washington Township Fire Chief Terry Wilson.

“He said he had his seat belt on.” No hazardous materials were leaking from the truck, according to Wilson, who had several firemen and trucks on the scene. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was investigating the crash.
