Officials closed Interstate 80 Monday morning after they say one person has died in a crash involving dozens of vehicles. It happened near Echo Reservoir at milepost 172 shortly after 7 a.m. Authorities say drivers were caught off guard when they came across a sheet of ice which was caused a pileup involving 23 vehicles. They say at least half of the vehicles involved are semis. Troopers with the Utah Highway Patrol say extreme road conditions caused the pileup.

“This is exactly why we preach safety for this reason..It’s the primary cause in the winter months when you’re traveling in these remote rural areas. Please slow down. That’s it. It’s got to be an individual thing,” Lt.Harley Watkins with UHP said. Westbound I-80 will remain closed until further notice, but one eastbound lane is open. The identity of the person killed has not been released. This is a developing story. Updates will be posted as they become available.
