A semi crashed into a building Monday morning on the Indiana Toll Road, near the Elkhart-St. Joseph County line.It happened around 7:15 a.m., near mile marker 90, outside Altec Engineering Incorporated. Indiana State Police say the semi left the roadway for an unknown reason and hit an abandoned pickup truck that was sitting on the entry ramp to the closed service plaza.

The semi kept going and plowed into the building, hitting a forklift before coming to a stop. The truck driver was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. He was identified as Kazmierez Kisiel, a 66-year-old from Westfield, Massachusetts. The building suffered heavy damage, but nobody inside was injured.

“My first thought was it’s going to be, you know, horrible for the driver because hitting a building is not something vehicles are designed to do. And then, I thought of the possible loss of life or serious injuries to the people that are working in the building,” said Sgt.  Ted Bohner of the Indiana State Police, “So it looked like everybody was at the right place at the right time today to avoid what could’ve been a horrific situation.” Officials say there were no harmful chemicals inside the truck. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
