A heartbreaking crash in Columbia, IL, left one person dead and seven injured Tuesday afternoon. Six of the injured were children, police said. It happened around 12:30 on northbound Rte. 3 just north of Columbia High School. A truck hauling grain hit an SUV near the Veterans Parkway intersection, police said. The vehicles came to rest about 100 yards away. The Illinois State Police accident reconstruction team was investigating but had yet to determine what led to the crash. The six injured children were all in the SUV, a Chevy Suburban, along with an adult driver, who was killed.

They were all members of the same family, police said. The truck driver was from Millstadt. Police had not released the names or ages of those involved as of early Tuesday evening but said at least two of the injured children were in car seats. All of the injuries were serious, police said. The short stretch of northbound Rte. 3 was closed for nearly four and a half hours.
